Once again, the Speech and Language Department in Malta has been very active in celebrating AAC Awareness month. In June 2010, the AAC Special Interest Group, together with the Literacy Special Interest Group launched an essay competition. School-aged children were asked to write an essay about AAC. Stories ranged from experiences that the children had with their peers. All entrants will be receiving a certificate of participation and the winners will be presented with a prize. Several events were prepared for the members of the AAC Club. The events for AAC Awareness were kicked off in September, 2010 where members of the AAC Club were invited to attend a picnic at one of our local beaches St Thomas Bay. Members of the AAC Club, together with their families were also invited by Voices- Malta Foundation to watch this year's Voices Concert themed 'Listen to the Music'. Members and families of the AAC Club danced the evening away as they were treated to listening to popular songs sung by a 200-strong choir. Members of the club are also invited to celebrate the first year anniversary since the launching of the AAC Club. This is being supported by Playmobil FunPark. The AAC Club will also be starting off the 24 Hr Read-a-thon on Skype, Facebook and Twitter. Aiming towards high-visibility, the Speech and Language Department were invited to talk about AAC on local Radio Stations. The Speech and Language Department also delivered various workshops, namely, 'Compiling Communication Books and Boards' and 'Communicating through Assistive Technology'. A presentation about 'AAC Strategies: Making a Difference' was also delivered in celebration of Aphasia awareness day. A film 'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly' is also going to be shown to the general public in order to increase awareness of AAC. AAC Visibility and Awareness Webcam Project in the USA
Everyone Communicates invites people in every community to participate in the AAC Visibility and Awareness Webcam Project. For more information, details, and ideas, see this site: http://aacvisibilityandawareness.blogspot.com/). The goal is to bring attention to AAC and to people who use it or support it in their communities. These people may be the role models and mentors who can teach others about AAC and about being a good communication partner.
People who use AAC and their supporters are invited to have a conversation using AAC at a public webcam site (we have provided links to over 500 sites in the US, some in restaurants!) or with their own webcam, to have a rally or festival, or to post a sign promoting AAC and to share information on AAC. Wouldn’t it be great to see people using AAC to communicate (AAC in Action) or signs with “I Love(heart) AAC” in places all over the USA—viewable on the internet via webcams? Many people do not know what AAC stands for, so even a sign creates an opportunity to provide information. The best promotion is for people to see someone using AAC. We welcome pictures of these events captured from webcams or cameras so that we may post them in our blog to show AAC in Action, AAC events, and people who use AAC and their supporters in communities everywhere.

Documentary Film Tour Sites in October: Wretches and Jabberers
“Tracy Thresher and Larry Bissonnette are two men with autism who have limited speech but a whole lot to say. As young people, both faced lives of isolation, unable to convey their inner intelligence. It was not until adulthood when each learned to communicate by typing—giving them a way to express their thoughts, needs and feelings—that their lives changed dramatically. After more than ten years of advocating for people with autism, they felt it was time to take their message global—to help people with autism in other countries around the world break through the isolation they both knew so well.” www.wretchesandjabberers.org The documentary will be shown at these locations in October: SYRFILMFEST on October 16 and Burlington, Vermont, on October 22-26, 2010. See the website for more details, including film clips and blogs.
