Countries all around the world celebrate AAC Awareness during the month of October. This year, individuals who use assistive technology to communicate, together with their families and friends, professionals and other supporters will participate in the 2nd Annual International AAC 24-Hour Read-a-Thon. Members of the AAC Club, within the speech-Language Department in Malta, will officially open this year's event online on 20th October at 12 noon GMT. The AAC Awareness Campaign team will keep the online chat open for 24 continuous hours on Skype, Facebook, and possibly other media, as people around the globe join in to chat and to share information and resources. Everyone with an interest in AAC is welcome: people who use AAC, parents, friends, siblings, professionals, supporters. In last year’s pilot project, there were participants from seven countries. We hope to break that record this year, with participation in every time zone and active chatting around the clock. Read more . . .

Dear Abby and AAC: Teaching the General Public about AAC
Here's a brilliant bit of promotion . . . A group of people who use communication devices put together a list of ideas for interacting with and understanding people who use AAC. Then they sent it to the advice column “Dear Abby”, which is printed in many newspapers across the USA. What a great idea! Abby printed it, so the list reached a broad audience who otherwise might not have come across the information. As we all know, people speaking for themselves in their chosen method of communication can be powerful. These six folks certainly were. Our congratulations go out to this group for taking action to teach the general public!
Their letter was the second one on Friday, August 27, 2010. Here’s a link to the letter. Just scroll down the page to find it.
